Recently while online, as I attempted to read a couple of articles; one from the Times in New York [Shot Down In Cold Blood: Prominent Knoxville Citizens Killing Each Other] and the other from London [Prominent Citizens Slay Each Other In The Streets Of Knoxville], my attention was drawn away by an ad for Tennessee homicide attorneys, Joseph A. Baker and Virginia Jessup Baker d/b/a Baker Associates. The Bakers present themselves as experts in Second Degree Murder in East Tennessee [So as not to be confused with Second Degree Murder in Middle and West Tennessee?].

Without getting into a deep discussion here about the differences between first and second degree murder in the Volunteer State, according to Baker’s Law blog; Tennessee Code Annotated Section 39-13-210(a) terms the crime of Second Degree Murder as a knowing killing and Tennessee Code Annotated Section 39-13-202 describes the crime of First Degree Murder as a premeditated and intentional killing.

The Titans Of Tennessee

What I know about Tennessee I can count on five fingers. One, Sam Houston [1793-1863], he of the Cherokee name, Colonneh, meaning Rare Bird, was the 8th Governor of Tennessee then afterwards the only American to be the 1st and 3rd President of another country, the Republic of Texas. Finally, he’d become the only American to become Governor, the 7th, of a second state, Texas.
