In a rebuking reversal of the lower Appellate Court’s decision, the Supreme Court of Illinois ruled 7-0 in favor of Rahm Emanuel’s bid to become the next mayor of Chicago. The process for Emanuel to get and stay on the ballot has been a long, and some would say, unfair course.

Previous Rulings

When the current mayor, Richard Daley, announced he would not run for re-election, Emanuel made his decision to return to his hometown and run for the position. This is when all of the drama began. First, other candidates, and then a couple of residents themselves questioned Emanuel’s eligibility to run because he was out of the state.

The election board and the Cook County Circuit Court both ruled Emanuel eligible to run for mayor based on his residence. According to the December 15, 2010 Huffington Post article entitled Rahm Emanuel’s Residency Hearing: Tenant Testifies Today, Emanuel owns a home in North Chicago the district he served as Congressman until tapped as Chief of Staff to President Obama. His family continued to live in Chicago until August of 2009 Washington D.C.
