Job Availability For Lawyers

Most women make a common mistake during their divorces. No matter how savvy they are, they may feel like their attorneys are their knights in shining armor. However, even the best divorce lawyers are seldom trained to be financial advisors. As much as your attorney may care about you and your case, he is neither a psychiatrist nor a psychologist. Don’t expect too much from your attorney.

No One Can be a Specialist in Everything

Elizabeth MacBride, in her article “Relying Too Heavily on a Divorce Attorney Can be Bad Financial Planning,” talks about how easy it is for anyone, especially a woman, to expect her divorce lawyer to guide her through the emotional and financial turmoil of divorce. According to MacBride, “I am an Investment Advisor…I began my career as a CPA. Still, when I went through my own divorce several years ago – and in spite of all that I knew as a seasoned financial professional – I had unrealistic expectations about the process (and) the role of my attorney.”

Even though MacBride was the primary breadwinner in her marriage, she felt that she had been pre-programmed early in life to accept that men take care of women. And, during her time of vulnerability, MacBride saw her lawyer as her white knight.
