In the day and age that we live in, television, movies, fast food and video games seem to occupy the minds of our children most of the time.

Children's physical and mental health

Childhood obesity and diabetes are on the rise and tragically so. In my opinion, this is largely based on the fact that our children are not getting out enough, not using their imaginations enough, not taking the time to get the proper exercise and many aren't able to adhere to proper diets due to fast paced lives and demanding jobs of parents.

It's not just the physical ailments that are on the rise due to this type of lifestyle .I've observed that many children are not exercising the most important muscle of all enough – the brain. Using very little imagination, thinking and processing leads to bouts of boredom that seem to only be fulfilled by more video games. A lack of interest in having fun, running around, arts and crafts and more seems to be plaguing our nation. We seem to be living in a time when enough is never enough, including time. However,we can make the effort to slow down and actually seek something more than instant satisfaction for both ourselves as well as for our children.

The New York Public Library

The New York Public Library (NYPL) is and always has been a fantastic resource for encouraging children to get out of the video game, texting, typing, monotonous frame of mind and jump back to the most basic of basics – reading There is a program that is not very well known in our public library system, and this is for the NYPL branches of Manhattan as well as Brooklyn and Queens branches. It's called the RIF club. It stands for Reading is Fundamental and is a great way to get kids back to the excitement that reading can bring.

When you sign your children up for the RIF club, they immediately start off by getting a free book of their choice, according to their reading level and there are a vast array of books to choose from. This is always a great way to catch a kid's attention; hey, after all adults aren't the only ones that like to receive free stuff! And what's even better is as you continue to bring your kids to the library, after school as a resource for homework help, on the weekends for read alouds, storytime, concerts shows and more, they continue to get stamps on their card. Every time they hit a highlighted yellow line with a stamp, they get yet another free book.

There is no cost to join, and there are branches of your local library pretty much in every New York City neighborhood. You can go to their website to find out where your closest branch is located.
